-
How many
children are in a class?
At Berkeley School, classes are limited to 20 students.
-
What is
Berkeley's teaching philosophy? Students are placed in a class with children of their age
group for social development. However, each student will have his or
her own program. For example, a 2nd grader who has some reading
difficulties but excels at math may be in a 1st grade reading program
and a 4th grade math program. In this individualized setting, a student
can take more time on a concept that's harder for them, then progress
more quickly as the work becomes easier. A student is not forced to
progress to the nest concept until the prior concepts are mastered. This
is accomplished through positive reinforcement and a supportive and
nurturing environment.
-
What does
the curriculum include? Classes for students include: reading (or
literature for older students), math, social studies, science, language
arts, Spanish, computer, art, music; dance/aerobics, physical education
and world culture.

-
Will my
child be ready to enter the public school system or another private
school upon graduating from Berkeley? Yes. Berkeley School uses
California State Adopted Texts. This means that students at Berkeley use
learning material approved by the State of California for age-appropriate content.
Beginning in the 2nd grade, Berkeley School students take the Iowa Test
of Basic Skills, a national standardized test. Over the last 10 years,
our students have averaged in the
95th percentile for their grade levels. Generally, students are working
at two levels above the norm.
-
Is
Berkeley on a year-round schedule? Yes. We've found that spreading
out the three-month vacation over the year results in better skill retention.
The Berkeley School year starts at the beginning of August and continues through the end of
June. The school is fully closed the month of July. During the month of November, and
one month in spring (mid-March to mid-April) Berkeley offers an
intersession plan, outlined below. Click here for Berkeley's
School Calendar and
Schedule.
-
Are there
programs available during the vacation months? Yes. During November
and the spring intersession months, Berkeley School offers themed intercessions
(similar to a summer camp). A recent intersession program featured a "Medieval Times"
theme. The children learned about medieval European culture.
Some of the activities included production of illuminated manuscripts, building a
castle and hearing stories about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round
Table. The intersessions are offered at an additional cost. The school is closed in July, with
no intercession program.
